I recently posted that committing to a healthy life style is just that; a commitment. Part of following through on a successful commitment is careful planning. I feel that you can only really know what is in your food if you cook it yourself, but we have to realize that life gets crazy sometimes and you can’t make a grand meal everyday. A little weekly planning will make it easy to grab or throw healthy meals together during the week.
I usually start on Saturday filling out my weekly meal planning template. I do have the luxury of returning home each day for my lunch hour so some of my lunch choices are a bit more involved than if I were to pack a lunch each day, but with a little planning you can make sure you have smart lunch choices on hand to take with you.
Once I’ve filled out this template I use it to create my shopping list for the week. I usually leave Saturday meals blank because I almost always have leftovers! If I don’t then we’ll take as a sign and head for a dinner out! 🙂
The key to this is to keep it simple and realistic. I often eat the same thing for breakfast, and I’ll choose one or two things to eat for lunch knowing there will be leftovers from dinners to nibble on if I’m bored. I usually choose dinners that can piggy back on each other (same ingredients needed to make multiple dishes). Then I choose one “deep cooking” (relating to the phrase “deep cleaning”) task for the week that will hold me over for a couple of weeks like; par-cooked pizza crust with sauce I can keep in the freezer, roasting garlic or peppers, cooking vegetable stock, or creating a soup I can portion out and freeze. Again I usually piggy back a “deep cooking” task/ingredients in relation to the dishes I choose for the week.
Keep posted because I hope we all can do this task together one week. I’ll post my menu, recipes, shopping list, and “deep cooking” tasks and help you plan and cook for the week. The best thing about planning and choosing one day to “really” cook is that your house smells amazing with the bounty of food cooking in your kitchen.
